Lentil plants grow to a height of about 40 cm and flower in high summer (central Europe: July). The flowers are self-pollinating.
Giant lentils have a diameter of about 7 mm.
Various types of lentil are available to buy including brown plate lentils (with husk), yellow, green, red and black lentils.

They prefer a warm location, light rather dry, chalky soil.

Propagate by sowing seeds. Lentils with a husk can be germinated.

Cucumbers, Peas

Plants that are well suited for next year cultivation:

Asparagus, Brussels sprouts, Cauliflower, Kale, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Radish, Sweet corn, White cabbage

The following plants should not be planted in the following years:

How many years: Not to plant:
4 – 6 year(s) Lentils

  • Rather keep dry
  • Manure is not necessary as they need very little nourishment.
  • Hoe and hoe again. Lentils are very sensitive to weeds.
Tip:
The spacing within and between rows should not be too far so that the plants can support one another.

Pests: Birds

It is difficult to find the right time to harvest lentils as they ripen irregularly (from the bottom to the top).
As soon as the lowest pods are brown and the seeds are hard, the plants cut off just above the soil and are hung up in bundles to dry.
The seeds are left as long as possible in the pods to better keep the nice lentil colour.
In each pod there can be one, mostly two or (rarely) three lentils.
For a small garden the amount that can be harvested will be on the low side.
Tip:
Lentils improve the structure of the soil.

In a dry place, dry lentils will keep for about a year.

Lentils are cooked to eat.
They do not have to be soaked first.
Using lentils:

  • Lentils can be served with port or game
  • They can be served as a hearty soup
  • With herbs, they can be used for dal, a traditional Indian dish
Tips:
  • Lentils contain a lot of protein.
  • If lentils are soaked before cooking, the level of indigestible compounds will be reduced.
